Freight Outlet, owned by Mel and Lois Gilbert, opened its first store in Saint Jo on May 27, 1989 in the old Ware Cleaners building, owned at that time by Walter Collier. This opening happened, by the way, on the weekend of the first Pioneer Days celebration in Saint Jo. Then when the White's Auto Store building, owned by Joan Williams became available, Freight Outlet moved across the square to occupy this larger space. Further expansion came about a year later when a portion of the Russell Newman building was rented for warehouse storage; later the entire building was occupied and a portion of it was used for retail sales. Approximately six years ago buildings and property owned by D & D Builders at Highway 82 and Highway 59 came up for sale; Mel drove past it for months and finally inquired; the purchase was negotiated, and the arduous task of converting the buildings into retail space began. Gradually, as refrigeration, air conditioning, plumbing, etc., was completed, the Freight Outlet businesses on the square were phased into the highway location. Merchandise may include virtually any type, with unclaimed or distressed goods, groceries and frozen products making up the largest portion. Freight Outlet tries to offer merchandise at or below wholesale prices, catering to both wholesale and retail customers. Freight Outlet wishes to say "thanks" to all the loyal employees (past and present) and customers who have walked this changing road with us. |
